EDITOR'S
COMMENTS
This month's newsletter's coming hot
on the heels after the last one but I'm off to 'nannysit' in the UK in
mid-June, so better get it out to you all before I go. And sure the next
week'll be real busy stuck in front of the TV! Mom lives with my sister
and she's off to tan her b_m in Tunisia so I'm stepping into the breach
to keep Mam company.
We're a strange bunch! The Keane/McCarthy
fiasco took full precedence over the formation of our new government for
the next 5 years! Well, I suppose we've got our priorities right. More
about all that below.
Our 'winter' weather's driving us
all nuts and the water tables are rising. Hope we don't see a repeat of
last year's flooding. Loads of visitors in town already - they must think
we're all a little mad after last Saturday's result!
You're all very welcome, by the way,
as we discuss some of the interesting stuff going on here in Ireland.
God Bless and enjoy the snippets for
this month.

WHAT'S
HAPPENING IN IRELAND
Let's start where I left off - the
election. The sooner we get electronic voting nationwide the better. Talk
about marathons! Two constituencies went to one recount after another
with just 5 or 6 votes separating the last 2 candidates in Kerry and Wicklow.
Took them over a week to declare the winners.
Our national airline's in big trouble
and 'off the air' due to a pilot's strike. Did that economic disaster bother
us? Not a bit of it! That wee snippet of news took back seat to the trouble
in the Ireland camp - the Soccer Camp that is!
Now you know how important a government
is to the people? And how much we depend on our tourism industry this time
of year? Well, to watch the news for the past 2 weeks you'd
think the Civil War between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy was the
most important thing on earth!
Well of course it was - wasn't our
National Pride at stake on the Japanese and Korean Battlefields and our
Greatest Warrior evicted from the Camp! Oh what phun! Will he go back -
won't he! The bookies had a field day and the nation held its breath for
a full
week. Oh yes - we've got our priorities
right! We might be stuck with this government for the next 4 or 5 years
but we'll have to wait another 4 years to see another campaign of soccer.
We relish the enjoyment while we can!
No need to say anymore - our gallant
gladiators did the biz on Saturday when they managed a draw against Cameroon
in our opening World Cup Game. Considering the tension and trauma of their
preparation week - not a bad result at all.
First half had us all down in the
dumps but an entirely different team emerged after half-time, full
of vim and vinegar, and then wee Matt Holland put the fizz back in
us all with his corker of a goal in the second half. The country's
been half mad since - cars all bedecked - even got 4 flags decorating my
own tank!
The pubs are doing a roaring trade
serving milk and breakfasts! Very few got an early licence dispensation.
Mind you - the stalwart support troops had a strategy all planned.
Out the night before and sure 'why bother going home, won't we be
getting up at the ungodly hour of 7am anyway'. Many fell into the nearest
establishment open for the match and sobered up with a hearty Irish Fry!
So we gird the loins as we go to battle
again on Wednesday - this time against the Germans. Sure WW2 was nothing
to this campaign! By all accounts the Irish fans have the Japanese baffled
with their phun and hilarity. Seems they were top news items after Saturday's
game. Imagine, almost 10,000 big green, white & gold bruisers emerging
onto the streets of Nigata, roaring and singing like loonaticks! Oh the
phun o' it all - shades of Italia 90!
Well - 'nuff guff from here. Time
to let you know what's changing in the Shops!

UPDATES
TO THE IRISH SHOP
Father's Day and Summer Weddings are
the focus for June, and of course the Soccer Supporters. The foodhall continues
to be a popular item and since adding the Bulk-Buy options, orders have
increased. Looks like you lot have 'sweet teeth' and enjoy the ole
fry-up and 'country butter' too!

CELTIC
WOMEN INTERNATIONAL
Preparations are underway for the
5th annual conference in New Orleans this coming October. Galway is pegged
for the 2005 conference and, coincidently, our city is nominated as the
European City of Culture that year too. So if we win the title, what better
place to hold an International Celtic Conference eh?
I'm on a big membership drive these
days as this fledgling organisation starts to go truly international. It's
young, it's vibrant and it's all things Celtic to all Celtic people, young
and old, male and female, Irish and Welsh, Scots and Manx, Cornish, Breton
and Galician. Give me a shout for details of how you can be a part of this
little group destined to become a global Celtic force!

CIRCLE
THE WORLD WITH PRAYER
The Circle of Prayer is growing nicely
and we now have 65 people joined together in prayer from all over the world.
The prayer book continues to grow, with heartfelt prayer requests. Pop
in and see what it's all about and maybe even decide to set aside just
10 minutes a day to join us all in a wee bit of time with the Father.
God Bless, hope to 'see you
all' next month.
