EDITOR'S
COMMENTS
Hello folks,
This month's newsletter will be short
and sweet as holiday makers, visitors and kids stuff take up most of the
time as well as fitting in all the usual stuff.
God Bless and enjoy the snippets for
this month.

WHAT'S
HAPPENING IN IRELAND
Galway's still reelin' from a feast
of festivals. The Film Fleadh and the Arts Festival were crackers and the
Galway Races beat all records - YET AGAIN!!!!! The end of July saw the
Galway Hurlers packin' their bags and sent home by our kindly neighbours,
the Clare Hurlers, and, woe is me, the stout-hearted footballers from the
County of the Tribes
battled the Kingdom (Kerry) on Sunday
August 4th and lost their title! No Galway interest in the championships
at all, at all this year - must be the weather here in the wesht! We'll
just have to shout for Sligo and Clare!
The GAA are rubbing their hands in
glee as the change in the Championship games sees many more games being
played and larger and larger gates returning the dosh. The stadium at Croke
Park was a sell-out for the Dublin game a few weeks ago and netted them
well in excess of 1 million euro. Pity we can't see the public's money
allowing them to open the pitch to our international soccer games. Now
there would be a sight to see - the end to the silly 'foreign games' rule.
Mind you, it all hinged on that most English of games of course!
The Dail (our parliament) is still
on summer recess but that hasn't stopped the various reports from the multitude
of Tribunals going on here. Latest news is the investigation into the awarding
of a second national mobile phone licence some years ago. Looks like it
could be linked in with an investigation on political corruption.
We have just had a new 'points on
the licence' law passed whereby any driving offence, from bad parking to
drink driving, driving and using a mobile phone at the same time, and speeding
offences will result in a points on the licence. 12 points means a 6 month
strike! It is hoped it will make better drivers of us all and reduce the
carnage on our roads.
The big debate here at the moment
is the cost of our car insurance. It's gone nuts since September 11th and
now we see the whole world paying for the damage. Insurance costs have
risen hugely across the board for any form of insurance. The car insurance
industry badly needs to be deregulated here in Ireland as there seems to
be an oligopoly in operation.
The weather's been bad all summer
and we are beginning to see the results. Blight has hit the potato stocks
and vegetables will be as scarce as hen's teeth. Rice and pasta will be
the order of the day for the winter.
I've started writing an article or
two for a great little magazine published here in Galway - GalwayNow. As
glossies go this has to be the best I've ever come across and each month
you'll find a snippet on the contents.
Well - 'nuff guff from here. Time
to let you know what's changing in the Shops!

GALWAY
NOW MAGAZINE
Galway Now has a fine selection of
articles and features for the reader this month, as usual. They have added
a new section called Man Alive! - and all because the man deserves his
own section of GalwayNow magazine! The part of the magazine designed to
give men a plausible excuse for reading GalwayNow. It may be a small section
this month but it will grow in time and anyway, who says size matters?
There's also a little corner for His Bits - the latest gadgets and gizmos
that guys fancy! I've become a regular contributor and have a wee piece
in this month on Lughnasadh, the Celtic Season of Gathering.

CELTIC
WOMEN INTERNATIONAL
Preparations are underway for the
5th annual conference in New Orleans this coming October. Galway is pegged
for the 2005 conference and, coincidently, our city is nominated as the
European City of Culture that year too. So if we win the title, what better
place to hold an International Celtic Conference eh?
I'm on a big membership drive these
days as this fledgling organisation starts to go truly international. It's
young, it's vibrant and it's all things Celtic to all Celtic people, young
and old, male and female, Irish and Welsh, Scots and Manx, Cornish, Breton
and Galician. Give me a shout for details of how you can be a part of this
little group destined to become a global Celtic force! Celtic

CIRCLE
THE WORLD WITH PRAYER
The Circle of Prayer continues to
grow nicely with people joined together in prayer from all over the world.
The prayer book continues to fill up, with heartfelt prayer requests. Pop
in and see what it's all about and maybe even decide to set aside just
10 minutes a day to join us all in a wee bit of time with the Father.
Circle
of Prayer
Well folks, that's all for this time.
Thanks for your patience in staying this far.
God Bless, an' hope to 'see you all'
next month.
