EDITOR'S
COMMENTS
Hello folks,
The month of September sees the end
of summer and a glorious entry into Autumn with beautiful weather for us
here in Ireland. It's 'back to school' time and as I write the children
in the local school right next door to us are out at play in God's wonderful
sunshine and making lots of happy noises.
We approach the first anniversay of
September 11th and here in Ireland we have many TV programmes commemorating
that tragic day, the lives of those who died and also the economic repercussions
of it all. We too feel the dreadful results through the close links the
Irish have with New York and the effects the attack has had on our own
economy too. Our
thoughts and prayers are with all
Americans as they get ready to commemorate their 'dreadful day in history'.

WHAT'S
HAPPENING IN IRELAND
Well not much to be quite honest!
The government's just back from the holidays and in debate mode! The next
big issue, apart from controllinginflation and meeting the bills, is the
second attempt to have the Nice Treaty ratified. The usual government spin
and propaganda about enlargement being held up by the Irish is hogwash!
Enlargement can go
ahead without the need for this Treaty
as was laid down in the Maastricht Treaty. What many of us fear is the
gradual erosion of our national independance to a centralised Federal European
Government and the sneaky way that the Social Charter slips in EU Legislation
none of us want!
I hope this referendum is defeated
but with a larger majority than the last time, then maybe the 'big wigs'
in Europe will sit up and take notice and go back to the people of the
whole EU and find out what they think of it all. Here in Ireland we are
the only country to get the chance to put every EU change to the people
by referendum. Betcha if the rest had that opportunity, all the other 'happy
europeans' would voice the similar concerns.
We have wall to wall sport for the
month of September, rounded off with a couple of festivals - Oysters that
is! Clare and Kilkenny meet in the hurling finals on Sunday, and Armagh,
who beat Dublin last week, will meet Kerry in the football finals two weeks
later. The Boys in Green gird their loins for the kick-off game in the
qualifiers for Euro 2004 this coming Saturday. First match is against the
Russians in Moscow - Gawd Help Us!
In our group we will meet Russia,
Albania, Georgia and Switzerland and we are kinda the favourites to come
out of the group on top. So the green jerseys, all washed and pressed after
the World Cup, come up off the 'floordrobes' yet again as we shout
on 'our lads'. Sure how could life ever be boring with the likes 'o that!
Well - 'nuff guff from here. Time
to let you know what's changing in the Shops!
